NMP- European Producers VS Imports

In this article find out how NMP is made, who produces it in Europe, and how to get it more economically for your production.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is produced through a process known as the N-methylpyrrolidone synthesis. This process involves the reaction of N-formylpyrrolidone with methanol in the presence of a basic catalyst, such as sodium methoxide. The reaction takes place at high temperature and pressure. The N-formylpyrrolidone is produced by the reaction of pyrrolidine with formaldehyde. The pyrrolidine can be produced from propylene, which is obtained from the oil and gas industry.

The reaction between N-formylpyrrolidone and methanol yields NMP, formic acid and water as by-products. The NMP is then purified and distilled to remove any remaining reactants or byproducts. It's worth noting that there are different methods for making NMP, but this one is the most common industrial process.

The major producers of N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) that have been previously active or are still producing in Europe include:

-LyondellBasell (Netherlands)
-BASF (Germany)
-Mitsubischi (Japan)

SAME Chemicals is able to provide affordable N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) to customers through our importation partnership established with reputable chemical manufacturers in Asia. Our partnership allows us to source high-quality NMP at a competitive price, which we can then pass on to our customers. Additionally, we have a strict quality control process in place to ensure that the NMP we import meets the highest industry standards, including REACH.
